There were 1.6 million credit card merchant contracts and 11.9 billion transactions, totalling €564.6 billion in 2017. This represents more than 40% of domestic consumption. A decree issued in 2018 requires local authorities to use electronic payment methods, either online or by bank card, between 2019 and 2022, depending on revenue thresholds, to pay for swimming pool, canteen, tax and water bills.
